"While confession may be good for the soul, incarceration is not."

G.D.O’Bradovich III

March 23, 2017

“I have reached the end … this is not a work of fiction.”
-Donnie Darko

Leo Strauss expressly wrote that certain authors have one audience: young men who like to think.

The ability to think or reason is not a gift that nature has bestowed on all.

Writing to like minded individuals would be expected. To write to a select audience, to those that can comprehend. Joy. An act of love. Seeking recognition from those who have not come into being. Winks and nods across decades and centuries. The ultimate inside joke. We are amused.

Is it likely that certain writers are secretly inclined to write to a very select audience? Yet, these writers outwardly address their works to humanity.

The impetus to write to young men may initially seem strange, yet one covets what one sees and we surmise that they observed curiosity; not that they desired what they had in abundance, curiosity, but a desire for acceptance and approval, since as children, future philosophers are invariably described as “not quit right” by adults. This explanation is simply a function of the adults’ collective inability to realise something, or anything, beyond their experiences and imaginations.

Devoted political philosophers tend to remain celibate, no doubt, due to the demands of their calling or vocation. As the Master says, one cannot serve two masters without eventually hating one and loving the other. Therefore, the political philosopher will pursue his calling, his lifelong love, alone, although it is unlikely he will be lonely or without certain individuals or Apprentices, if he is truly a Great Occultist in fact, rather than in name only.

As the “not quite right” children mature into youths, they will continue their individual pursuits, far from the maddening crowd and their variable opinions, and find solace in solitude. We should not be surprised if their careers are chosen not only for security, financial and otherwise, but for the limited involvements with the general public.  We may say philosophers have a concern for humanity, but a type of disdain for interruptions of their work.

Leo Strauss suggests that philosophers are the happiest of men, as wisdom, not opinions have been their lifelong focus. We are uncertain of the validity of this statement, but if true, then this happiness must be the result of acceptance, after a period of depression, or of digesting terrible truths.

As a youth, Yours Truly was always perplexed when systematic killers or criminals allow themselves, or rather desired, to apprehended by law enforcement. In hindsight, we clearly felt that individual freedom was more important than anything else we considered to that point. Yet,  now due to long and painful experience, we understand that a great work that remains unrecognized has the same value of a work never created. Therefore, there must come a point in time during the career of a master criminal that he desires capture, if only to be recognised for his efforts and his presumably long career successfully avoiding detection.

We wonder how many pseudo philosophers have abandoned reason and engaged in  criminal, immoral, and illegal behaviours. Along similar lines of inquiry, we wonder how many of these pseudo philosophers, or criminals, utilized esoteric writing to put their crimes in various dialogues or, if in plays and other works of fiction, then in the mouths of fools, villains, and other questionable characters. After all, human nature, or rather, a certain type of human ego, demands recognition, if not praise, for arduous undertakings culminating in success. We presume that our criminal would document such criminal activity in such a manner as to elude the attention of most careful readers.

We propose that our pseudo philosopher will be familiar with the writings of Machiavelli, Nietzsche, and the concept of the will to power, if only as an ill reasoned justification of his illegal actions. Our criminal will make liberal use of the immunity of the commentator and critic, whether discussing historical or contemporary subjects, to esoterically allude to his crimes.

In order to avoid the limelight, our criminal will always prefer employment below his natural abilities. Stability will not be the defining word for his employment, as the need to find potential victims outweighs financial security.

Our criminal may even make outrageous claims about himself, and his abilities, both to amuse himself and to entice his audience. Additionally, he will engage in self deprecating behavior to insure that when his crimes come into the light, as they invariably will, neighbors, friends, and co-workers will be surprised, shocked, and horrified to learn the truth about the always quiet guy with few friends.

Generally, the opinions of acquaintances will reflect only how they understand themselves, not the facts pertaining to our criminal. In fact, to successfully navigate popular prejudices, we expect our criminal to be adept at handling any and all situations. The criminal knows both what he has done, and the subsequent effects upon surviving family members and friends, and if they should discover the identity of the perpetrator and his whereabouts, he surley would suffer a drawn out and painful death. Our criminal will actively avoid this ignominious fate for as long as possible.

Our criminal will have a defined comfort zone for his illegal activities and he will rarely, if ever, leave this area. He may be well known to declare that he would never leave the area, to the palpable disbelief of his audience. If pressed for a reason, then our criminal will offer a well rehearsed explanation. We caution that “well rehearsed” and “likely” are not synonymous.

Our criminal, due to an abnormal curiosity since at least early childhood, will be familiar with many subjects to various degrees and he will use his extensive knowledge to convince potential victims that although being odd, he is, in the final analysis, completely harmless. Afterall, conventional wisdom knows that systematic killers are deranged and mentally unstable individuals who are easily recognised as such, whereas well spoken individuals, and by implication, intelligent persons, tend to be reasonable, not rash, and, for lack of a better word, “safe”.

Our criminal will be aware of long closed social venues, so as to beguile older victims, and be familiar with current trends, especially music, to  present himself as “cool” and “hip” to potential younger victims.

Unlike the vast majority of documented systematic killers who began torturing animals in their youth, we propose that our “not quite right” pseudo philosopher only began his criminal career long after most systematic killers are apprehended. This delayed behaviour may be due to a lingering belief in the conventional views of morality, of good and evil, from his nominally formative years. Due to our criminal’s suggested retarded learning curve, we suggest that his formative years will encompass his thirties and forties. Virtue is conquered. We may say that once popular opinions are questioned and found wanting, opinions regarding morality must follow, the result is the same: refutation of the common, followed by disgust; praise of the rare or unconventional, followed by embrace.

Our criminal may conclude that poorly reasoned opinions are the result of a defective mind and, by extension, this inferior mind inhabits a body. Inevitably, he will conclude that these individuals are the embodiment, or physical manifestation, of life not worthy of life.

Our criminal will discuss various aspects of his activities, albeit in a non threatening, and in a humorous, even comical, manner, with certain associates. We suggest that he may be so forthcoming as to declare his intent to “stalk” certain individuals, act accordingly, and discuss the encounter afterword.

Our criminal will be versed in basic psychology,  through years of observation, if only to successfully choose victims. To preclude potential victims from realizing the fact that they, themselves, are being targeted, our criminal will insure that his victims are aware of his uncanny observational abilities.

Our criminal will not only attempt to obscure the reason for being so observant, but succeed; such as by resorting to psychic ability, or to astrology, and to supposed astrological influences. From time to time, he may attempt to guess potential victims astrological “signs”. Of course, if he fails, he will quickly recover, offering any number of “reasons” for his poor guess, not doubt to the amusement of his audience. We note that an intentionally “poor guess” allows for increased personal interactions with potential victims. In conclusion to this part, our criminal wants recognition for his refined skills of observation, and praise for his ability at deduction, and for his knowledge or mastery of matters that are beyond mere mortals.

Our criminal will present a dual nature, professing ignorance concerning basic knowledge, such as pertaining to maintenance and repair of vehicles, and application of technology, while declaring knowledge of obscure subjects, such as philology and Egyptian hieroglyphs.  The reason for this supposed ignorance and subsequent inability is to insure that he will meet, ingratiate, and involve himself with certain individuals, enablers and helpers, who will be available as potential victims.  We suggest that this preference for duality will include entertainment, notably movies and music, and literature.  As understood by our criminal, duality can be found in any medium that has multiple possible interpretations. Accordingly, we expect our criminal to have select lists of  movies, music, and books.

Our criminal will not contact newspapers or local law enforcement showcasing his successes, but will present his work to the largest possible audience and will, therefore, utilize the worldwide reach of the internet and have a website. If a logo is present on his website, we suggest it will be an unassuming and harmless looking character; likely not human and possibly created by an associate who is unaware of our unknown subject’s criminal history. Our criminal will be satisfied and amused knowing that of all the thousands of readers, none of them would suspect that are viewing, in fact, is a website dedicated to documenting criminal behavior. We suggest that our criminal’s prefered humor is ironical, as knowledge has no obligation to ignorance.

Our criminal may be known to make seemingly nonsensical statements, such as “I had fun once, but didn't enjoy it.” and deceiving potential victims by stating, “I would lie to you, but not about” the topic under consideration. Thereby, hinting that he would, of necessity, lie about systematic criminal activity. Of course, the listener would not suspect that criminal activity on a large scale would the topic alluded to by our criminal.

Our criminal will not be able to control his writing, as it is an outlet for his activities during those dark times when suitable victims are unavailable. We suggest that his website will have several hundred pages, perhaps in excess of a thousand pages, and the vast majority of the pages will focus on obscure explanations of seemingly unimportant details. Additionally,  these explanations will be extensive. Through the passage of time, the only focus of the website will be to record his achievements and any superfluous activities pertaining to the website will be curtailed. We suggest that a complete record of his activities will be documented within endless commentaries. Of course, the purpose of this unnecessary verbiage is to overwhelm any criminal investigator and prevent any attempt at prosecution, as esoteric writing is always uncertain, ambiguous, and open to reasonable doubt.
Due to our criminal’s meticulous nature, he will demonstrate an almost obsessive behavior regarding dates and times. We expect this tendency to be found throughout his extensive online writings.

As all systematic criminals “devolve”, we duly expect our criminal to exhibit increasingly erratic behavior towards the end of his career. Behavioral changes will become so pronounced that causal acquaintances will notice, however, by this time, almost all contact with long term associates will cease. Although it is highly unlikely that associates would contact law enforcement based entirely on appearance, our criminal would not allow such unwelcome attention; although our criminal would be able to successfully navigate any encounters with law enforcement.

Morality clauses are a standard section of employment contracts and such contracts are the exclusive domain of upper levels of management or those deemed to be important. The Gentle Reader may rightly presume that adherence to moral standards by low level employees is neither required nor expected.

When immoral activities  among upper level employees are revealed, those individuals guilty of poorly defined infractions are quickly dismissed. These terminations occur both in  profit driven companies and in nonprofit organizations; the former, to minimise bad publicity and to insure the continued sales of goods and services; the later, to maintain the donating public’s goodwill.  Both entities depend on the public’s perceptions to continue; as the Master said, “Those who live by the sword…”

Our website is primarily educational and, in the spirit of free inquiry, we do not restrict access to the public, solicit donations, expect  agreement with our opinions, or obedience to our authority. Therefore, we are not dependent on the public's favorable opinion for our continued efforts to research, to educate or to inform. Conversely, unfavorable public opinions are not detrimental to our work.

Our group is nominally hierarchical, Master, Apprentices, and Assistants to Apprentices; and its existence is ultimately based on free association.  [“What you freely joined …”] In conclusion to this part, our modus operandi is ideally based on reason, and our unofficial motto could be “Reason is calling.”

The Gentle Reader will reach his own conclusions regarding the intended audience of esoteric writing and the reason, or reasons, the overwhelming number of employees are not deemed worthy to practice, or be held accountable to, the standards of conventional morality by their employer.

The Gentle Researcher will reach his own  informed opinions concerning the presentation of facts and the subsequent offering of fanciful, yet plausible, explanations for said facts, and the value of injecting subjective fiction into an initially, and ostensibly, serious commentary upon Spinoza’s Theological - Political Treatise.
