OUr concern regarding the premise of a spherical earth
We quote from the first chapter of Copernicus' "Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres":
First of all, we must note that the universe is spherical.
The first sentence of the first chapter states the universe is spherical, without any evidence or an argument. This statement is "an idea that is taken to be true, and often used as the basis for other ideas, although it is not known for certain".
The reason is either that, of all forms, the sphere is the most perfect, needing no joint and being a complete whole, which can be neither increased nor diminished; or that it is the most capacious of figures, best suited to enclose and retain all things; or even that all the separate parts of the universe, I mean the sun, moon, planets and stars, are seen to be of this shape; or that wholes strive to be circumscribed by this boundary, as is apparent in drops of water and other fluid bodies when they seek to be self-contained.
No objective argument is presented to accept that the perfect form is the sphere. The "sun, moon, planets and stars" are said to be spheres without any evidence, although they are round. Interestingly, the sun and the moon are listed separately from the planets. The implication is that the author does not consider the sun and moon as not planets. This opinion is contrary to the entire history of astronomical convention, as Greek astronomers employed the term asteres planetai (ἀστέρες πλανῆται), "wandering stars", for objects which moved over the sky.
Hence no one will question the attribution of this form to the divine bodies.
The appeal to authority is unsatisfactory for a scientific inquiry.
