"I'm sorry you have failed."

Miss Pomeroy’s exasperated response is not unexpected and we empathize with her difficult situation - she is a scapegoat. Although we know from our research that Karen and Principal Cole are two of the “manipulated living”, the scene remains poignant for all those who have been unfairly accused and summarily judged. We note that there is no indication of either Miss Pomeroy’s failure as a teacher or evidence of her students’ failure; yet, she must play her vital role to motivate Donnie to complete his world saving mission.
Unlike Miss Pomeroy, we do not recall any external agency explicitly declaring that we have failed, although we acknowledge our failures, that is, we have fallen short of our expectations, or in the words of Saint Paul, missed the mark. The Capricorn has two operational modes- either struggling under self imposed obligations, or controlling the situation. Over time, it seems that the former dominates our life.
We have no reason to suggest our life serves a purpose, so we must retreat to that domain of uncertainty - hope - we hope our life was neither lived in vain, nor that it will seem as if it was lived in vain.
If we were to suggest external manipulations either directing or controlling our life, then we would justly be accused of presenting at least one aspect of psychotic behavior. We can offer no evidence of external forces directing, or perhaps influencing, our actions, nor can we consider such an explanation as being likely or probable.
We can only state mea maxima culpa, much, no doubt, to the delight of our detractors who abundantly apply the vague concept of “responsibility”. We wearily concede the point, as the mantra of responsibility indicates a mind of limited understanding, the assumption of blame and guilt, and, ultimately, the implication of a dualistic worldview. Life is bigger than the accusers and detractors realize, and they are not me.
If we assign a reason to our existence, then the reason would be long series of causes and effects, however, we cannot discover a purpose, meaning, or goal to our life that is external to ourselves - either our purpose is obscure, or its revelation is obscured.
Item 1. The state makes a distinction between Yours Truly and the overwhelming majority of Hoosiers. The discrimination began before my coming into being, persists, and will continue. We note that this distinction manifests itself as a form of marginalization.
Upon being asked my name, the invariable response is “I am called George.”; the implication is that “George” is not my name, but what the state, or certain others, calls me. I strenuously avoid most discussions of family by stating, perhaps disingenuously, that such knowledge has no bearing upon, and does not assist in any understanding of, Yours Truly. Of course, I am aware that this single fact reveals more than I wish to discuss, more than I want to speculate upon, hence, it is assiduously avoided.
The factual response of “I don't know any family” will only be met with incredulity and any further inquiries will be without purpose and no resolution to this issue of familial ignorance is forthcoming. The Gentle Reader now knows why personal questions are futile: Yours Truly possesses no relevant facts and any disclosure of any facts by the state are forbidden by the state.
The privilege of knowing siblings, including one’s twin, is restricted by the state and if we, in our darker moments, are secretly covetous towards certain brothers, whether successful television personalities or know to us personally, then the Gentle Researcher understands our envy of what we can never experience.
Item 2. We have also been subjected to slights and slanders from innumerable persons; suppositions ranging from devil worship to atheism, both asinine positions, and everything in between.
For the suggestion of a conspiracy to be valid, collusion must either be present, or considerable compelling evidence must be discovered. We have no evidence that the state, and its various agencies, have conspired with hundreds of individuals over many decades for the purpose of making my existence different from, or inferior to, other citizens.
As there is no discernible evidence of a conspiracy between item one, the state, and item two, the mob, we must conclude that Yours Truly lacks at least one criterion for being afflicted by a type of neurosis. Therefore, we consider that Yours Truly is neither psychotic nor neurotic.
In conclusion, we can only offer the Gentle Researcher the undesirable, but not unwarranted, reason for Yours Truly’s predicament: bad luck.
