Unfinished
The explicit purpose of this essay is to learn what the Old Testament teaches concerning the Occult Arts and Sciences. However, as with all of our previous attempts to understand the Bible, the result is not an understanding, but a critical commentary on the translation of the King James Bible version.

H178
H178 אוֹב 'ôḇ masculine noun, from the same as אָב (H1)
The KJV translates Strong's H178 in the following manner:
familiar spirit(s) (16), bottles (1).
אוֹב ʼôwb, obe; from the same as H1 (apparently through the idea of prattling a father's name); properly, a mumble, i.e. a water-skin (from its hollow sound); hence a necromancer (ventriloquist, as from a jar):—bottle, familiar spirit..
It is helpful to know that a “necromancer” is properly understood as a ventriloquist.
Regard not them that have familiar spirits H178 neither seek after wizards to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:31
And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits H178 and after wizards to go a whoring after them. I will even set my face against that soul and will cut him off from among his people. Leviticus 20:6
A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit H178 or that is a wizard shall surely be put to death, They shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them. Leviticus 20:27
Or a charmer or a consulter with familiar spirits H178 or a wizard or a necromancer.
Deuteronomy 18:11
Now Samuel was dead and all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city, and Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits H178 and the wizards, out of the land. 1 Samuel 28:3
Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit H178 that I may go to her and enquire of her and his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit H178 at Endor. 1 Samuel 28:7
And Saul disguised himself and put on other raiment and he went and two men with him and they came to the woman by night and he said, ‘I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, H178 and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.’ 1Samuel 28:8

The phrase “bring me him up” suggests that Saul wants the woman to bring the spirit up from Sheol.
And the woman said unto him, ‘Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done: how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits H178 and the wizards out of the land. Wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?’ 1Samuel 28:9
And he [Manasseh, v.1] made his son pass through the fire and observed times and used enchantments and dealt with familiar spirits H178 and wizards. He wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger. 2 Kings 21:6
Since he phrase of passing “through the fire” is not explained, there exists only speculative comments. It is difficult for us to believe that people killed there own children by fire. Tamino and Pamina successfully passed through the fire. We suggest that passing through the fire is a euphemism, just as baptism could be described as passing an infant through the water.
Moreover the workers with familiar spirits H178 and the wizards and the images and the idols and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD. 2 Kings 23:24

The law was lost at an unknown time and only found during the time of Hilkiah. Without knowledge of the law, the nation of Israel become followers of Baal or the “Master”. [Vide Apprentice Graham’s essay on Baal worship.]
So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit H178 to enquire of it; 1 Chronicles 10:13
And he [Manasseh, v. 1] caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom. Also, he observed times and used enchantments and used witchcraft and dealt with a familiar spirit H178 and with wizards. He wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger.
2 Chronicles 33:6
Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent. It is ready to burst like new bottles. H178 Job 32:19
Of the 17 occurrences that H178 is found in the Old Testament, it is translated as “familiar spirit(s)” on 16 occasions. Only in the book of Job is it translated as “bottles”. It is clear that in Job that a scribal error has occurred, as “my belly… is ready to burst like” familiar spirits is incomprehensible.
And when they shall say unto you, ‘Seek unto them that have familiar spirits H178 and unto wizards that peep and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?’ Isaiah 8:19
And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof and I will destroy the counsel thereof and they shall seek to the idols and to the charmers and to them that have familiar spirits H178 and to the wizards.
Isaiah 19:3
And thou shalt be brought down and shalt speak out of the ground and thy speech shall be low out of the dust and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, H178 out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust. Isaiah 29:4
Isaiah 29:4
H825

The KJV translates Strong's H825 as: astrologer (2).

Daniel 2:2
In the context of astrologers, magicians, and sorcerers, the nationality of “Chaldeans” is odd and we suggest that in certain situations, “Chaldeans” refers to an unknown group of occultists.

H3049
H3049 יִדְעֹנִי yiḏʿōnî masculine noun, from יָדַע (H3045)
The KJV translates Strong's H3049 as:
wizard (11).
H3049 is derived from H3045 יָדַע yāḏaʿverb. The KJV translates the 947 occurrences of Strong's H3045 as: know (645), known (105), knowledge (19), perceive (18), shew (17), tell (8), wist (7), understand (7), certainly (7), acknowledge (6), acquaintance (6), consider (6), declare (6), teach (5), miscellaneous (85).
The reasonable conclusion is that “wizard” or “a man who has magical powers, especially in legends and fairy tales” may not be the best translation. The modern word “wizard” is derived from late Middle English (in the sense ‘philosopher, sage’): from wise + -ard. In plain English, the better translation would be “wise men”, as there are few examples in the texts to suggest that “wizards” have magical powers, unlike, for example, necromancers. However, when “familiar spirits” are paired with “wizards”, it would be reasonable to conclude that the “wise men” have magical powers.
Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, H3049 to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:31
