For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda;
of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
Hebrews 7:14
of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
Hebrews 7:14
We are uncertain why the anonymous author of Hebrews would state that it is "plain or obvious; clearly seen or understood" that Jesus is from the tribe of Judah.
Jesus, son of joseph
Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Fourth Gospel 1:45
And they [the Jews] said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? Fourth Gospel 6:42
Philip knows that Jesus is the son of Joseph and the Jews know Jesus' name, that he is the son of Joseph and his father and mother and, typically of the fourth Gospel, their names are omitted. We notice the wording "son of" and "his father". Evidently, these are different. The following are examples of "son of Joseph" in the Old Testament:
The sons of Joseph after their families were Manasseh and Ephraim... Numbers 26:28
[Of] the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph:.. Numbers 27: 1
[The] tribe of the sons of Joseph... Numbers 36:5
[The] male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families. Joshua 17:2
Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but..., his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel:... 1 Chronicles 5:1
In these dwelt the children of Joseph the son of Israel... 1 Chronicles 7:29
As demonstrated from the above examples, the Jewish appellation "son of Joseph" indicates Jesus is descended from Joseph and not from Judah. Therefore, it is not evident that Jesus is Jewish, since the Fourth Gospel explicitly states he is from the tribe of Joseph.
