introduction
Yours Truly has been fortunate in pursuing various avenues of research relatively unhindered. To find what one enjoys and to be driven in that direction is not the conventional understanding of work. Unconventional is the word to describe sea goats and centaurs. Mother, let your children sincerely live in the house of their rising sun.
We acknowledge that no amount of alleged conformation from lyrics and videos, music or otherwise, can be evidence for the flat earth theory. We are aware that our efforts are a diversion, an amusement with a goal: Can we acquire enough objective evidence, while excluding coincidence, and demonstrate a reasonable conclusion suggesting R.E.M. brings attention to the flat earth theory?
We know that it is impossible for a vacuum to exist to a non vacuum. If this is all we know about outer space and our atmosphere, then it is enough to question the heliocentric theory, gravity, the earth as a spherical planet, and much more.
We offer additional evidence for flat earth references in the songs and music videos of R.E.M.
The supposed reason for the introduction of the Gregorian calendar is that it was no longer accurate for determining the date of Easter. (To this day, the Orthodox Church continues to use the old dating for Easter.) This is, if not a falsehood, then an example of picking a flimsy pretext (the solstice has moved) to arrive at the desired result (a revised calendar).
The date of Easter was not, and is not, determined by the actual full moon after the observable equinox. The dating of Easter, then as now, is determined by the Easter tables. If the Roman Church had made the “corrected” date of Easter determined by astronomical observations alone, then one could accept that this new method of dating is significantly different from the previous method.
However, other than some minor alterations to the Julian calendar, it is not radical. Could this calendar innovation from the year 1582 be considered a “slip” or misstep?
In 1701, experiments were conducted in the church of Saint Mary and All the Angles to verify the “new” dates of Easter. It seems that 120 years is a long, but not an impossibly long, passage of time to verify a scientific claim that was supposedly urgently needed in the 16th century. Could these experiments authorized by the Pope from the year 1701 be considered a “slip”, could the Easter dating change have occurred a century later than what the history books tell us, circa 1680?

"Stand"
We are challenged to face north and then to face west and to “wonder” and “think about direction”. If we immediately state that north is the direction when the sun is at our backs, then we would be correct. However, if we move our head “around”, that is, visualize a different perspective, then we would realize that this cannot be a valid definition it one is south of the equator.
When we “wonder why” this is not valid, we are forced to reason and to question our previous ideas. If we are south of the equator with the sun at our back, why would we be facing south and not facing north? Would we know we are south of the equator? Do I know Terre Haute is north of the equator? Yes, because the sun [at noon] is always south of the city. Of course, tradition says the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and I have accepted the premise that the sun is always south, not north, of the city. Otherwise, I would be south of the equator. In conclusion, I cannot know where I am without referencing the sun, and even using the position of the , I rely upon tradition, not reason, when I say I am in the northern hemisphere. I know now less than before analyzing these lyrics.
Therefore, whatever north is, it may, or not be dependent on the sun. North may be determined and defined by Polaris, or the aptly named pole star. Similarly, west is the direction the sun travels towards, not the left side of the observer when the sun is at his back.
North now becomes a standard based on the pole star, while east is the direction where the sun comes into view, and west is where it departs. East and west are determined by the sun. By default, whatever is not north, east or west must be designated “south”.
The answers to the questions of standing where “you live” and standing where “you work” are the same regardless of who asks, when they ask, or where they ask: the answer is always the flat earth.
If we are "confused", then we are advised to “check” the sun and carry a compass to assist our efforts at clarification. There is an image of a compass and a paper drawing of the sun with the earth’s orbit and string and pencil. This procedure presupposes that the "confused" individual has the ability to determine the locations of both foci. Without these locations, we can do nothing towards finding our way.
One definition of “check”, meaning “to examine the accuracy of” something, appeared in the late 17th century. Check also means to “confer with”, in this case, conferring with the sun.
When the lyrics “Season is calling” is sung, we see an imagine explaining the seasons due to the earth’s tilt. Considering the ninety plus millions of miles from the sun, a few hundred miles of “tilt” should not result in freezing winters and baking summers; just as a few thousand miles from the tropics should not result in a temperate climate.
The images on the left are a man and the spherical world with a rocket leaving the atmosphere. The images on the right of the screen are of atoms (carbon?) and of the Empire State building. We have seen men and buildings, but we have never seen the spherical earth or atoms. The outer images are seen again in a larger format, the inner images are not omitted.
There are projections of images of the hydrologic cycle, this process can be observed in terrariums. This may hint that the domed earth is an all encompassing terrarium.
Daedalus was the inventor of screws, which we see, with a screw driver. Screws rotate, unlike the flat earth.
At least two view of going down hill are shown, alluding to the round earth.
The wind is blowing on the dancers and a video of wind swept trees are in the background. We presume neither of these winds are the thousand mile an hour winds at the equator, nor the five hundred per mile winds at 45° north.
We are reminded several times (six times?) that our feet are “on the ground” and this is the epitome of stating the obvious. Several scenes depict the band members jumping. Our senses, or at least our sense of balance, tell us we are not moving at fantastic speeds.

"losing my Religion"
We briefly see the shadowy image of Father Time projected on the background. Father Time, with his sickle, is one version of Saturn. Saturn rules the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius.
The scene where a man places his finger in the side wound and turns to face the viewer is exactly what Saint Thomas wanted to do, as any second hand stories of Jesus’ resurrection would not be sufficient: he doubted. Saint Thomas day is December 21, which is the winter solstice date in the majority of years.
We observe several images of Saint Sebastian, whose feast day is December 18 (Orthodox) and January 20 (Roman). The range of dates is, for all purposes, encompasses the sign of Capricorn. The arrows wounding St. Sebastian may bring to mind the arrows of Apollo, the sun god.

We quote in full what we consider to be the salient section. As online lyrics are notorious for lack of punctuation, we have added punctuation [in brackets] to clarify what we believe is the intent of the author.
Consider this [:] Consider this the hint of the century[.]
Consider this [:] the slip that brought me to my knees, failed[.]
What if all these fantasies come flailing around[?]
Now I've said too much[.]
“Consider this” is a threefold repetition. The word “consider” is derived from Latin meaning “with stars” or “with the star group” ("sidus" is star). The constellation Capricornus forms a triangle. This stanza indicates the singer has said too much, but omits stating he has not said enough. Therefore, any hints of the flat earth must be found in this section.
Shadows of armillos or astrolabes are shown several times in the video.
Consider this “the hint of the century”. We are puzzled by this hint or clue and can offer no definitive solution. We note that English references to Copernicus do not occur before the 17th century; although we expect earlier acknowledgments of his considerable achievement.
However, we are certain regarding the images of (1) Father Time, (2) St. Sebastian, (3) image of St. Thomas and the triple repetition of the word (4) “consider”.
These images are associated with (1) Saturn, (2) the dates December 18 and January 20, (3) December 21, and (4) the derivation from a star or stars.
We know these four facts direct us to either Capricornus, or Capricorn, but we are uncertain of what, if any, significance this has regarding the flat earth theory.
The singer is brought to his knees and although Capricorn rules the knees, we are uncertain how to connect this fact to the preceding facts and reach any type of viable conclusion.
One definition for “corner” is the convergence of two lines, what we would today call angle. “Corner” ultimately derives from the Latin, “cornu”, meaning “horn”. As a sea goat, Capricorn has horns.
“Flailing” derives from flail, a tool used by shepherds. Ganymede was a shepherd and is identified with Aquarius, the cup bearer. Once again, we have an indication of a Saturn ruled constellation.
“Hint” is first recorded from 1595 to 1605. So the “hint of the century”, if we take the clue at face value, is the ending of the 16th century and beginning of the 17th century.
“Otto” means wealth or prosperity and this word is found on the blueprints. The irony of prosperity, of reaching the upper sky, and of Icarus failing due to the dome above the world is appropriate.
There is a scene where the backdrop is divided into light, due to the spotlight, and dark areas. Between the two extremes is a hazy area partially partaking of both. We understand this hazy area as twilight. Twilight is not possible for any length of time on a planetary sphere, either the observer is in the light or quickly [at 500 miles per hour at 45° north] is in the dark.
Five hundred miles per hour is 8.3 miles per minute, or 733 feet per second. Clearly, no one has ever experienced being overcome by darkness, or sunlight at dawn, this quickly. We wonder whether if certain mathematicians, attempting to be thorough, provided the decreasing rotation speeds for various degrees above the equator, did not “slip” up. By continuing this progression to the poles, we approach a rotational speed of zero miles per hour. We look forward to the explanation of why planet earth is not ripped asunder, as the area at the poles barely rotate and the equator rotates at 1,000 miles per hour.

conclusion
Individually, the lyrics and videos may lead certain people to see evidence of the flat earth theory. However, when both are analyzed together, we are confronted with reasonable doubt, not certainty. We expect reasonable doubt in esoteric writing, but to not expect doubt in music and videos would be unreasonable. We enjoyed our research, perhaps more than we should have it enjoyed it, for the reason that we are not told explicitly of the flat earth; we must seek for ourselves, from personal observations, while following clues and “hints” that depict everyday experiences.
We hope our excursion into lyrics and music videos has been informative for the reader, thought provoking for the Gentle Reader, and enjoyable for the Gentle Researcher.

The Hindu goddess found in corners is Jyestha.
The quintet representing religion is in the light. The fallen Icarus and the surrounding quarter is in the darkness. The narrator has lost faith in religion and science. The singer slumps to the floor exposing a book affixed to the wings of Icarus. The wings represent the limits of science and the book represents revealed religion.
We suggest the singer has lost faith in religious beliefs and then had faith in the promise or continued advances of science. The singer has lost faith in the progress of science, as it must be limited to our world and has :lost his religion", or all faith, whether religious or scientific. The narrator must rely on his own observations and reasoning.
