Potential Apprentice Cor Cor is desirous of studying under a Master of the Occult Arts and Sciences and, until that fortuitous time, is content to study with Yours Truly. For potential Apprentice Cor Cor’s initial essay into The Wonderful World of Occult Research™ , we suggested exploring a strange phrase from the Old Testament: the abomination of desolation.
And arms shall stand on his part and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength and shall take away the daily sacrifice and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
Daniel 11:31
Per Wikipedia:
The gospel of Mark ascribes to ‘Jesus a speech concerning the Second Coming, Matthew [24:15-16] adding a reference to Daniel, and Luke [21:20-21] giving a description of the Roman armies’ and ‘in all three it is likely that the authors had in mind a future eschatological (i.e., end-time) event, and perhaps the activities of some anti-Christ.
Therefore, the abomination of desolation is linked, at least in the minds of the authors of the Gospels, to the destruction of Jerusalem.
Jesus almost exclusively applies the phrase ‘the Son of Man’ to himself, either in the present or in the future. Although it is a strange phrase, it is the correct English translation both of the Greek text [υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου] and of the Hebrew text [כבר אנש].
The understanding of the term ‘the Son of Man’ is twofold; firstly, as Jesus prophesying his current mission and, secondly, his future roles both as the suffering Messiah and as the Judge of the Living and the Dead. These interpretations are acceptable to us.
The ambiguous nature of the phrase can be understood from the Gospel of John, where the ‘people’ ask who is the Son of Man and from the Gospel of Mark, where the concept of being the ‘Son of man’ is indicative of blasphemy by the high priest and council [John 12:34; Mark 14:60-62]. It is uncertain why this title is considered blasphemous.
While the term ‘the Son of man’ is almost wholly applicable to Jesus, yet, it remains ambiguous, as an unknown person who is to be revealed is also called ‘the Son of man’ by Jesus:

Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed [ἀποκαλύπτεται]. Luke 17:30
Since the identity of the Son of Man is to be revealed, it follows that the identity of the Son of Man is unknown. Therefore, the Son of Man is not Jesus.
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:36
The purpose of this essay is to determine, if possible, the identity of the unknown character called by Jesus with the appellation of ‘the Son of man’.

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. John 6:53
This is one of two passages that all protestants allegorize [vide John 20:23], even those who profess the literal interpretation of the Bible, as they must admit that their 'pastors' are unable to change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, since communion is symbolic only.

The Son of man judges according to works, not according to beliefs.
There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Matthew 16:28
Jesus provides a narrow time frame for the coming of the kingdom, as some contemporary listeners will not die and see the kingdom. Therefore, the prophecy for coming of the Kingdom must have been fulfilled centuries ago.

the three gospel accounts compared 1
Jesus discusses the events surrounding the abomination of desolation as predicted in the book of Daniel. These prophecies from Jesus are found in the synoptic Gospels, but are absent in the Gospel of John. Many individuals, especially those with modern evangelical beliefs, interpret the events of the abomination of desolation as one of many ‘End Time’ prophecies. These ‘end of the world’ prophecies are believed to remain unfulfilled until the Antichrist appears, which precedes the Second Coming of Christ. The parallel passages are presented together for ease of comparison.
And Jesus went out and departed from the temple and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. Matthew 24:1
And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here! Mark 13:1
And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said,
Luke 21:5
And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. Matthew 24:2
And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? There shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down. Mark 13:2
As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. Luke 21:6
Jesus predicts the destruction of the second Temple.
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming and of the end of the world?
Matthew 24:3
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? Mark 13:3-4
And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? And what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? Luke 21:7
The Gospel of Mark connects the second coming with “the end of the world”. The only other occurrence of this phrase in the Gospels is found in Matthew 28:20.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. Matthew 24:4
And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: Mark 13:5
And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived… Luke 21:8
Jesus warns the disciples must be careful so that they may not be deceived. Although this message is directed to a select audience of twelve men, the advice remains valid.
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ [ὁ Χριστός, 'the Christ'] and shall deceive many. Matthew 24:5
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ and shall deceive many. Mark 13:6
[For] many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. Luke 21:8
Jesus warns his disciples that many people will come and say that he, Jesus, is the Christ and these people will deceive many others. We agree not only that this prophecy has been fulfilled, but it is fulfilled daily. The expectation was that the end of world is near, for 'even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time [ὥρα, hōra, 'hour']' [1 John 2:18].
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. Matthew 24:6
And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. Mark 13:7
But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Luke 21:9
There will be wars.
For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there shall be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in divers places. Matthew 24:7
For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and there shall be earthquakes in divers places and there shall be famines and troubles these are the beginnings of sorrows. Mark 13:8
Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and great earthquakes shall be in divers places and famines and pestilences and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. Luke 21:10-11
Although wars, great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences are commonplace, these will precede the end of the world. However, 'fearful signs and great signs in heaven', although a vague description, are rare.
All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you [the disciples, v. 1] up to be afflicted and shall kill you and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
Matthew 24:8-9
Many of the Apostles were persecuted and executed.
But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.
Mark 13:9
But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake. Luke 21:1
In the Christian expectation of the Second Coming, the usage of the word 'synagogues' seems inaccurate in the Gospels of Mark and of Luke, as one expects to read 'church'. If this revealing, or apocalypse, concerns the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, then the word 'synagogues' would be understandable. However, most modern Christians understand the events of 'the end of the world' as involving Christian churches, not Jewish synagogues.
And then shall many be offended and shall betray one another and shall hate one another.
Matthew 24:10
But when they shall lead you [the disciples, v.1] and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. Now the brother shall betray the brother to death and the father the son and children shall rise up against their parents and shall cause them to be put to death. Mark 13:11-12
And it shall turn to you for a testimony. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist and ye shall be betrayed both by parents and brethren and kinsfolks and friends and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.
Luke 21:13-16
The subject of these prophecies are the Apostles, not modern readers.
And many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. Matthew 24:11-12
False prophets and antichrists will multiply before the 'end of the world'. This prophecy is vague, as it is applicable to any given age.
But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Matthew 24:13
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. Mark 13:13
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish. In your patience possess ye your souls. Luke 21:17-19
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations and then shall the end come. Matthew 24:14
And the gospel must first be published [κηρύσσω] among all nations. Mark 13:10
In the Gospel of Mark, the word “published” is anachronistic. The KJV translates Strong's Number G2784 [κηρύσσω] as: preach (51 times), publish (5 times), proclaim (twice), preached (with G2258) (twice), preacher (once). Therefore, the translation of Mark 13:10 should be interpreted as ‘the gospel must first be preached among all nations’.

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Matthew 24:15
But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) … Mark 13:14
And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Luke 21:20
Matthew and Mark use the wording from the book of Daniel, ‘the abomination of desolation’, however, Luke omits this phrasing, but states that 'desolation' is near and Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies.
According to the account by Josephus, Jerusalem was taken by Roman armies in the year 70 AD.

Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Matthew 24:16

But woe to them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days! Mark 13:17
For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. But woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days! For there shall be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people and they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captive into all nations and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. Luke 21:22-24
Jerusalem was conquered by the Gentiles, that is, the Roman legions.
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: Matthew 24:20
And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter. Mark 13:18
For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:21

And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. Matthew 24:22
And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved, but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. Mark 13:20
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. Matthew 24:23

Once again, Jesus tells his disciples to not believe reports that the Christ has come.
For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:24
For false Christs and false prophets shall rise and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. Mark 13:22
False Christs and false prophets will appear.
3
Behold, I have told you before. Matthew 24:25
But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. Mark 13:23
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened and the moon shall not give her light and the stars shall fall from heaven and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: Matthew 24:26-29
Christ will not be found in 'the desert', contradicting the accounts found in Acts 9:3-5, Acts 22:6-8, and Acts 26:12-15.
But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light and the stars of heaven shall fall and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.
Mark 13:24-25
And there shall be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Luke 21:25-26
The coming of the Son of Man will not be a secret and it will known by all people through signs in the sun, moon, and stars.
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24:30
And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Mark 13:29
So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Luke 21:31
When these prophecies come to pass, the disciples will know that the 'kingdom of God' is near. However, previously, Jesus said, 'The kingdom of God cometh not with observation. Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you [Luke 17:20-21]. Since the kingdom of God cannot be both seen and unseen, then 'the kingdom of God', like 'the Son of Man', are ambiguous phrases.
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
Matthew 24:34
Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
Mark 13:30
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Luke 21:32
Jesus explicitly states that individuals from his generation will still be alive when these events transpire. The destruction of Jerusalem was approximately forty years after the crucifixion, according to the account of Josephus. Therefore, these events occurred, fulfilling the prophecies. These are historical events and are not future events as expressly taught by many modern Christians.
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Matthew 24:35
Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. Mark 13:31
Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. Luke 21:33
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
Matthew 24:36
But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Mark 13:32
But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, Matthew 24:7-38
Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house and gave authority to his servants and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even or at midnight or at the cockcrowing or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch. Mark 13:33-37
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness and cares of this life and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore and pray always that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:34-36
conclusion
All the prophecies of the abomination of desolation from the book of Daniel and the predictions of Jesus regarding the coming of the Son of man were fulfilled when Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD.
