356 Old Testament Prophecies concerning Jesus Examined

We were intrigued when we stumbled upon this web page proclaiming so many Old Testament prophecies concerning Jesus. Being raised in the Orthodox Church, there was no doubt and, therefore, no proving, no apologetics, that Jesus was the Messiah. We admit that we have always been fascinated with the protestant or modern claim that everything one can know about Christianity is found in one book. When we consider that over three fourths of a typical Bible is the Old Testament, our fascination delves into incredulity.
Almost five centuries have passed since the Council of Trent concluded and the Roman Church has yet to present to the world a final Latin Bible with the books “as they are contained in the old Latin vulgate edition” [Session 4, First Decree]. Judging by the inability of the Roman Church to satisfy the seemingly easy demand of the Council for a definitive text, we conclude that the "old and vulgate edition, which, by the lengthened usage of so many years” [Session 4, Second Decree] never existed.
Unlike the Roman Church, there are no dogmatic statements concerning the belief in a Bible in Orthodox tradition. The Bible is, and remains, a recent tradition of western Christianity. Although modern Christians find it difficult to envision a Church without a Bible, it is sufficient to recall that Saint Paul did not want to know Old Testament proofs of Christ’s Messianic mission, only “Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”
The primary difficulty with translations from the Hebrew language, as found in the Old Testament, is that it lacks verb tenses.

There is no such thing as "tense" in biblical Hebrew. (Modern Hebrew, on the other hand, does have tenses.) Biblical Hebrew is not a "tense" language. Modern grammarians recognize that it is an "aspectual" language. This means that the same form of a verb can be translated as either past, present, or future depending on the context and various grammatical cues. The most well known grammatical cue is the "vav-consecutive" that makes an imperfective verb to refer to the past. Therefore it is wrong to say that Isaiah 53 or other prophecies are in the "past tense." Biblical Hebrew has no tenses. There are many examples of what is wrongly called the "past tense" form (properly called "the perfective" or "perfect") being used for future time. This fact was recognized by the medieval commentators as well as by modern grammarians.

...To express facts which are undoubtedly imminent, and, therefore in the imagination of the speaker, already accomplished (perfectum confidentiae), e.g., Nu. 17:27, behold, we perish , we are undone, we are all undone. Gn. 30:13, Is. 6:5 (I am undone), Pr. 4:2....
This use of the perfect occurs most frequently in prophetic language (perfectum propheticum). The prophet so transports himself in imagination into the future that he describes the future event as if it had been already seen or heard by him, e.g. Is. 5:13 therefore my people are gone into captivity; 9:1ff.,10:28,11:9...; 19:7, Jb. 5:20, 2 Ch. 20:37. Not infrequently the imperfect interchanges with such perfects either in the parallel member or further on in the narrative.
-Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar (section 106n, pp. 312-313):
Another difficulty for a translator is to decide if the prophet mentally “transports himself in imagination into the future that he describes the future event as if it had been already seen or heard by him” or not. This aspect of interpretation creates greater uncertainty than does the lack of verb tenses. The lack of verb tenses readily explain the reason that the Old Testament contains so many predictions.
Additionally, the translations, or more accurately the interpretations of the text, is based not exclusively on the rules of grammar, but the traditional meaning of the text. Therefore, tradition is a larger component of translating Biblical Hebrew than is generally known by non specialists.
The Messiah is considered to be a descendant of David, however only two Gospels, Matthew and Luke, provide a descent from David.
A prophet is “a person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God”, whereas a prophecy is “a prediction”.

1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

12 Therefore will [F] I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide [F] the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured [P] out his soul unto death: and he was numbered [P] with the transgressors; and he bare [P] the sin of many, and made intercession [P] for the transgressors.
Even a casual reading readily suggests many aspects of the crucifixion of Jesus as related in the Gospels. Upon a closer study, one finds are 26 occurrences of the past tense [hath, 6; have, 2; was, 2; hid, esteemed, did, opened, pleased, and bare, once each], 6 occurrences of the present tense [is, 5; are, once], and 14 occurrences of the future tense [shall, 11; will, should, and shalt, once each].
The pronoun “he” is used on 26 occasions, “his” 15 times, and “him”, 11 times. However, no proper noun is found to clarify how, exactly, “he” is to be understood.
Since the text is intelligence, we will focus on two of the more obscure passages.
Verse 12 states that the unknown person will have “a portion with the great”. While we acknowledge “the great” is an ambiguous term, we speculate that, in the context of Jesus’ crucifixion, it refers to Joseph of Arimathea. In the Gospels of Matthew [26:46] and Mark [14:32], Jesus goes to the garden of Gethsemane, while in the Gospel of John [18:1] he goes to an unnamed garden. The Gospel of John states that Jesus was crucified in a garden and a new tomb [19:41]. Even today, a private tomb with a garden is a luxury.
Although the Gospel of Matthew explicitly states that Joseph of Arimathea was a “rich man” [27:57], this term may not due justice to Joseph's wealth. In a large city, many men may truly be described as rich, but few rich men would have the political connections to have an audience with the Roman military commander. It needs to be said that the meeting was with no advanced notice, as Joseph waited until Jesus had died. During the potentially volatile time during the Passover, the commemoration of the Israelites being freed from Egyptian slavery, there would be more pressing security issues than the disposal of a criminal’s corpse. Not only did Joseph speak with Pontius Pilate, and was allowed to take Jesus’ body [Matthew 27:57, Mark 15:43, Luke 23:50-52, John 19:38]. A legal question and an unstated moral issue is not raised. Why Pilate would allow a “rich man” who was a secret disciple [John 19:38], to take Jesus’ body rather than a relative of Jesus? Not surprisingly, this concern is not raised in the Gospels and we conclude that Joseph was a relative of Jesus, hence Pilate agreed to a reasonable request.
The second obscure passage is found at the end of the tenth verse: “he shall see his seed”. The word for “seed” [Strong’s Number H2233, זֶרַע zera in the Hebrew text and Strong Number G4690. Σπέρμα, sperma in the Greek text], although a euphemism, is clearly understood to be “issue” or “child”. Therefore, the passage is to be understood that, regardless of the suffering that the unknown subject endures, he will live to see his children. There is no indication that Jesus had children either in the Gospels or in Church tradition, yet, the first commandment given to man is to “be fruitful, and multiply” [Genesis 1:28].
The first verses of the fifty third chapter of Isaiah are the most convincing for a suffering Messiah that we have encountered so far- it is lucid with contiguous verses. If the surrounding verses are to be understood literally, then it follows that the verse concerning his seed should also literal. However, a commentary on this passage unnecessary allegorizes what is understandable. The commentary states: “or, "a seed"; a spiritual seed and offspring; a large number of souls, that shall be born again, of incorruptible seed”. We suspect all commentaries on this passage transform the physical seed into spiritual seed. We suspect the reasons for this interpretation is twofold. Firstly, to prevent certain individuals who “like to think” from asking difficult questions and, secondly, to maintain the unwritten, and wholly unbiblical, tradition that Jesus was not married.

25 And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.

24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
There is no doubt that these three verses concern the Messiah. Verse 24 is interpreted as representing 490 years from the destruction of Solomon’s Temple to the Roman destruction of the second Temple in the year 70 A.D. We will not indulge pedantic arguments concerning the chronology for arriving at the year 70 A. D. It suffices to state that there is only one source stating that Jerusalem was destroyed forty years after Jesus' crucifixion, i.e., the War of the Jews by Josephus. However, the Gentle Reader must be aware that the ancient histories that we currently utilize are solely based on the chronological opinions of Scaliger [d. 1609] and his Apprentice, Petavius [d. 1652].
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recording of the “Christian Era” being defined as “the era reckoned from the accepted date of the birth of Christ” was in the year 1657:
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recording of the “Christian Era” being defined as “the era reckoned from the accepted date of the birth of Christ” was in the year 1657:
1657 Wharton Wks. (1683) 49 The Greek Church numbereth from the Creation to Christ's Æra, 5508 complete years‥The year 1657, current of the Christian Æra
The “accepted date” of Christ’s birth is the accepted dating according to the opinion of Scaliger. The "accepted date" is a consensus of historians and not a fact that can be independently verified. Although verses are Messianic prophecies, no “flood” is recorded during or after the Roman siege [q.v. Revelations 14:20 for a flood of blood]. Therefore, this prophecy remains unfulfilled.
311. Daniel 10:5-6 Messiah in a glorified state Revelation 1:13-16
5 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz:
6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.
312. Hosiah 11:1 He would be called out of Egypt Matthew 2:15
When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.

This may be a Messianic prophecy, but it remains unfulfilled, as there is no everlasting ruler in Israel.
319. Haggai 2:6-9 He would visit the second Temple Luke 2:27-32
6 For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.
9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.

322. Zechariah 6:12-13 Priest and King Hebrews 8:1
12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:
13 Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
We may be a Messianic prophecy, but it remains unfulfilled, perhaps for all time, as no one can ride two animals, an adult ass and an immature colt, simultaneously.
329. Zechariah 10:4 The cornerstone Ephesians 2:20
Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.

4 Thus saith the Lord my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter;
5 Whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the Lord; for I am rich: and their own shepherds pity them not.
6 For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the Lord: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbour's hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them.
7 And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock.
8 Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul lothed them, and their soul also abhorred me.
9 Then said I, I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another.
10 And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people.
11 And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the Lord.
12 And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
13 And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.
343. Zechariah 12:10 The Messiah's body would be pierced John 19:34-37

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.

347. Zechariah 13: A violent death Mark 14:27
348. Zechariah 13:7 Both God and man John 14:9
349. Zechariah 13:7 Israel scattered as a result of rejecting Him Matthew 26:31-56
Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.
350. Zechariah 14:4 He would return to the Matthew of Olives Acts 1:11-12
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
If this is a Messianic prophecy, it remains unfulfilled.

352. Malachi 3:1 Sudden appearance at the temple Mark 11:15-16
353. Malachi 3:1 Messenger of the new covenant Luke 4:43
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy, as the Lord sends many messengers and prophets.
354. Malachi 3:6 The God who changes not Hebrews 13:8
For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.

356. Malachi 4:6 Forerunner would turn many to righteousness Luke 1:16-17
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
This is a specific statement and we suggest that the two witness are Elijah and Enoch, as neither died [Genesis 5:24, 2 Kings 2:11, cf. Revelation 11]. Yet “it is appointed unto men once to die” [Hebrews 9:27]. Of course, that “great and dreadful day of the Lord” has not happened. We are uncertain why this is considered a Messianic prophecy.
We are uncertain why the majority passages are considered as Messianic prophecies. In summary, on 144 occasions, the verses did not concern the Messiah; 32 occasions that are possibly Messianic prophecies; and two passages that are Messianic prophecies.
The difficulty of determining Messianic prophecies is due entirely that the majority of ideas relating to the Messiah are from extra biblical tradition, although the word “Messiah” occurs in two passages in the King James Bible version.

A cursory reading of these passages present potential additional material for Old Testament prophecies concerning Jesus. Going further, these verses are excellent for this purpose of Messianic prophecies, as all verses under consideration include the word that is translated as “Messiah”. We must ask: “Why were these verses omitted?”
We suggest that by including the passages that mention “thine anointed”, “mine anointed”, and “the anointed of the Lord”, additional attention will be brought to the subject of anointing, generally, and Jesus’ anointing, specifically.
In the Gospel of Matthew [verses 12, 13] , Jesus says: “For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.” Therefore, the anointing of Jesus is somehow connected to the preaching of the gospel.
To state the obvious, the religion under consideration is called Christianity, not Jesusism nor Baptismanity. The emphasis is on “Christ”, not Jesus nor baptism.
According to the Blue Letter Bible, Strong's Number G5548 [χρίω, chríō] is "probably akin to G5530 through the idea of contact; to smear or rub with oil" and is found in five verses

Strong's Number G5547 [Χριστός, Christos] is found on 569 occasions and is consistently translated as "Christ". We omit all citations for the word "Christ".
Strong's Number G5546 is derived from G5547, so there is a direct connection between "Christ", as an anointing, and Christian. The following are all examples of the word "Christian" in the New Testament:

From these three New Testament passages, we cannot determine what criteria determines what constitutes a Christian.
From the Oxford English Dictionary, we learn that chrism is an oil "mingled with balm, consecrated for ... certain sacraments in the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican Churches."

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recording of “Christian” meaning one “who believes or professes the religion of Christ; an adherent of Christianity” dates from the year 1526:
1526 W. Bonde Pylgrimage of Perfection Pref. sig. Ai Ye lyfe of euery christian, is as a pilgremage.
The first recording of “Christian” meaning the “believing, professing, or belonging to the religion of Christ” is from the year 1553.
1553 Eden Treat. Newe Ind. (Arb.) 38 They had in lyke maner serued other christian men.
The first recording of “Christian” meaning “pertaining to Christ or his religion: of or belonging to Christianity” also dates from the year 1553.
1553 R. Eden in tr. S. Münster Treat. Newe India sig. aai The Christian fayth.
At least from the year 1325, "Cristene folc" [Christian folk] were smeared with "crisme". Similar to baptism, chrismation is done in imitation of Jesus.
Conclusion
Our examination of the 556 Old Testament prophecies concerning Jesus yields 32 possible prophecies and two definite prophecies from Daniel. The majority prophecies from the two verses of Daniel may have happened, but as we previously noted there was no record of a flood at Jerusalem, so it is possible that all of the predictions will occur in the future.
Unlike most of the supposed prophecies, the prophecies found in Isaiah 53 are coherent, contiguous, consisting of almost 400 words, and create a discernible story. Due to many agreements between Isaiah 53 with the narrative of the crucifixion of Jesus, it can be stated that Isaiah 53 is the Messianic prophecy par excellence. Since the Hebrew language lacks verb tenses, the possibility remains that Isaiah was written after the crucifixion and inserted into the book of Isaiah. As no provenance of the Bible exists before the sixteenth century, this suggested insertion is highly probable.
A relationship exists, at least in the mind of Jesus, between his anointing and the proclamation of the gospel. Historically, there is evidence in the English language of a correlation between the objective act of chrismation and becoming a Christian. In the modern age, the subject belief in Christ is sufficient to describe oneself as a Christian.
The reason that the connection between chrismation and being a Christian has been severed is, in our opinion, to less the likelihood that people will question what they have been taught and seek answers, not from the Bible, but from history and philology. The modern idea that baptism is all one needs, along with belief, to be a Christian is challenged both by historical evidence and current practice. Of course, the chrism for chrismation needs to blessed, and since protestant ministers can neither change bread and wine into the body of Christ nor remit sins, it is unlikely they can sanctify the oil that is needed for chrismation. Therefore, a valid priest is necessary.
Unlike baptism and baptize, which are mentioned on at least 98 occasions in the New Testament and looms large in the minds of protestants, the anointing of Christ is largely forgotten. The questioning of the necessity of chrismation leads the honest seeker to wonder why the practice is not emphasized in the Bible and, following along this line of inquiry, to the realization that not everything concerning Christianity is found in the Bible. The ultimate conclusion for the honest seeker is that the Bible is unimportant for the practicing of Christianity.
The faithful recite Nicene Creed at every liturgy: [I believe] "in one Lord Jesus Christ ... And He rose on the third day, according to the Scriptures". The Creed does not mention what the scriptures are [Scriptúras, in Latin; Γραφάς, graphas, in Greek], so one must appeal to the authority, not of the Bible, but of the Church.
The Nicene Creed continues: [I believe in the] "Holy Spirit ... Who spoke through the prophets". The Creed does not mention who the prophets are [ prophétas, in Latin; προφητῶν, propheton, in Greek], so one must appeal to the authority, not of the Bible, but of the Church.
