Nihilism, in it's most common manifestation, is "Turn on, tune in and drop out." and applies to the vast majority of instances.
However, when shrugging is not enough, taking a negative approach is sometimes attempted.
James Holmes (Dec. 8) is an example of this negative approach. When life has no meaning and existence has no purpose, one will create meaning, for themselves and others, not unlike Jigsaw in the Saw franchise.
The survivors of that theatre now have purpose in their lives in the same manner that survivor's of Jigsaw's puzzles have meaning in their existence. Even if it is only to enjoy each day, it is better than what they had before the incident.
McDonald's taught me to ask "Why?" fives times to get an answer. It only takes three questions of "Why?" to get the answer of Modernism.
On a personal note, I see a career that had potential that will be reduced to nothing and that, gentle reader, is nihilism's only goal.
